Easitrac Pegged Turnout Kit

I need to build three more turnouts for Toshalt (one to replace an existing faulty turnout and two additional turnouts) so I have decided to build one of the Association's new pegged turnout kits.  I am very curious to see how this goes together, particularly as it uses a cast frog unit and doesn't need a track gauge.  Below is a shot of the kit.  Note that I have already bolted the frog in place and I have also started threading chairs.

I am also going to try one of the Associations TOU kits powered by a SwitchWright Switch Machine purchased from Tam Valley Depot.

Crossing has been secured and most of the chairs and track in place.

All the chairs and track in place. The point blades have been temporally fixed.

A couple of views of the almost finished turnout.

I have found this kit to be relatively quick and straight forward to build.  In particular the milled crossing and etched switch rail plates make this kit a breeze.  I have to confess that I haven't followed the instructions to the letter but certainly used them as a guide.  The basic steps I took are:

  • install the crossing
  • thread and fix the straight leg
  • thread and fix the curved leg
  • install the check rails
  • install the switch rails

I haven't yet soldered any power feed wires and won't do this until I have installed the point.
