My thoughts & ramblings about the World's Greatest Hobby

An Engine Shed for the HWLR

I need an engine shed for the HWLR and had been discussing how to go about it with a fellow 2mm modeler Kevin.  My thoughts were to scratch build it out of styrene or card, however, Kevin offered to 'scratch build' it using his 3D printer.  Now there has been a bit of controversy amongst the local modeling fraternity about whether a 3D printed model can legitimately be given the label of  'scratch built'.  I don't have a firm view myself, however, I do know that there is a substantial amount of work that goes into the design and finishing of such a model.  I decided to take up Kevin's kind offer and between us we came up with a design that I thought would fit nicely - this is the CAD drawing used to produce the 'parts':

Note that there is no back wall as it will fit up against the rear back scene and I will simply add a piece of card or styrene for the back wall.  Kevin ended up printing the model in three parts and I glued them together using super glue after some cleanup of the parts.  To minimise any chance of warping I have braced the long wall with some plasticard square section (not shown in the picture) and also put a piece along the 'other' wall.  I will disguise these as work benches.

I am using Scale Scenes Random Ashlar cladding and Metcalfe roofing slates.  The Scale Scenes Random Ashler has been used on other buildings on Toshalt, so I hope I haven't overdone the use of this cladding.  I will be using etched windows from the Ratio range and will add 'dirty' glazing to simulate the dirt that would inevitably be evident in an engine shed.  The main shed doors are also from the Ratio range cut down to suit.
